The Heavyweight Champion of Ranthambore
Every forest needs a king, and in Ranthambore, that title belongs to Sultan (T-72). He is the largest and most physically imposing male tiger currently residing in the park. With deep scars etched across his muzzle from territorial clashes and a muscular frame estimated at over 250 kilograms, Sultan is a sight that leaves even seasoned naturalists speechless.
Built for Dominance
Sultan’s physical proportions set him apart from every other male in the reserve. His broad shoulders, thick forelimbs, and oversized paws give him the power to take down large prey like adult sambar stags with relative ease. Rangers who have tracked him for years describe his pugmarks as among the biggest they have ever measured in Ranthambore.
His Domain
Sultan controls an expansive territory that includes:
- Zone 5 (Bakola) — the rugged terrain near Ranthambore Fort serves as his primary stronghold
- Zone 4 border corridors — where he patrols aggressively, asserting dominance over younger males attempting to expand
- Dawn waterholes — his preferred ambush locations where prey gathers at first light
A Vital Genetic Contributor
Sultan has sired cubs with several tigresses across the park. Wildlife biologists regard his widespread genetic contribution as critical for maintaining population health and diversity within Ranthambore. His offspring are already beginning to show the same physical robustness that defines their father.
“The moment Sultan materialises from the morning mist at Bakola, you understand what it means to be in the presence of a true apex predator. There is no experience quite like it.”
